When Ben and Lila moved into their sunny, 500-square-foot loft in downtown Denver, they were in love—with the light, the views, and the energy of the city. What they didn’t love? The clutter.
Their home had charm and potential, but no real storage. No coat closet. No room for a traditional desk. Just a wide, open living area with a single blank wall and nowhere to put anything.
They didn’t want prefab furniture or quick fixes. They wanted a solution that felt like it had always been there. Something beautiful, functional, and grounded in craftsmanship.
That’s where we came in.
When Ben and Lila reached out to us at Shaking Quakie Woodworks, they had a clear vision—but a tight space. The goal? Turn a 12-foot wall into a hub for their entire home.

It was the kind of challenge we love—a chance to solve real problems with real wood.
In a small space, material choice matters. Go too dark, and it feels closed in. Go too light, and it feels sterile. Ben and Lila wanted something that softened their industrial-style concrete floors but still felt clean and modern.
We chose clear-grade maple—and it was the perfect fit.
Maple is smooth-grained and subtly warm, with a natural brightness that reflects light beautifully. It’s durable, easy to work with, and brings just enough organic texture without overwhelming a minimalist aesthetic.
For a loft that needed to do everything, maple offered versatility, strength, and style.
We started the project the way we always do—with coffee, a tape measure, and a notebook.
During the first visit, we stood in the space with Ben and Lila and sketched out zones right on the wall:
Once we’d gathered measurements and talked through needs, we moved into 3D renderings. We used CAD to show how each element would fit—every shelf height, every grain direction, every shadow line.
For Ben and Lila, seeing their dream come to life in a visual model made it real. “It was the first time,” Lila said, “that we felt like our ideas had a shape.”
Once the design was locked in, we got to work in the shop.
We milled the maple boards, carefully selecting each panel to ensure consistent tone and grain flow. The shelving and doors were grain-matched so that lines would flow naturally from one panel to the next—a detail that’s easy to miss, but impossible not to feel.
Each cabinet was built as a modular unit to allow for easier transport and a seamless install. The hidden desk compartment used soft-close hinges and an integrated cable pass-through. Every drawer glided silently. Every shelf sat perfectly flush.
For finish, we used a zero-VOC hardwax oil that brought out the depth of the maple without adding gloss. It left the surface smooth to the touch and protected against daily wear—all without compromising indoor air quality.
Getting a 10-foot upper cabinet into a narrow stairwell? Let’s just say it’s good we built it modular.
Even with planning, real homes throw real curveballs. The loft’s wall had a subtle bow—imperceptible to the eye, but enough to throw off alignment. So, we scribed and adjusted every seam on-site, ensuring the final install looked perfectly flush, even in an imperfect space.
When we stepped back to look at the finished product, the wall didn’t just hold furniture—it became furniture. Warm. Clean. Permanent.
What was once a cold, unused wall now anchors the entire loft.
The bookshelf holds more than 150 books, plus framed photos, plants, and a few vintage finds from local shops. The hidden desk folds down smoothly and vanishes just as easily—perfect for a laptop, a sketchpad, or a glass of wine. The media cabinet hides all the cords, devices, and visual noise.
But perhaps the biggest change wasn’t functional. It was emotional.
“The loft feels peaceful now,” Ben told us. “It’s like the wall finally knows what it’s supposed to be doing.”
Small space? Big results.
This build was about more than aesthetics. It was about designing with intention—and proving that custom woodworking isn’t just for show homes. It’s for real people, living real lives, who deserve solutions as thoughtful as the rest of their space.
